NEW BOOK: Sketching Nature
I'm pleased to announce that my new book, Sketching Nature: The Beginners Guide to Keeping a Botanical Sketchbook, published by David & Charles, will be released on the 6th of May 2025.
This book is aimed at those starting out in botanical art and nature journaling. The simple rationale is to make keeping a botanical sketchbook accessible to all who want to try it by providing an attractive and hopefully inspiring book filled with practical advice. The book features instruction on the process of creating a sketchbook from the very beginning, with step-by-step images.
Recommendations are made for materials on sketchbooks, materials, colour mixing and techniques, with examples of sketch pages and details throughout. A range of several step-by-step sequences show the process of the development of sketchbook pages and how to construct them, using a range of plants and other subjects that can easily be found. Page composition and what parts of the plant to include is also include as well as what types of notes could be included on the pages. The process of creating sketchbook pages develops throughout the book to include a range of subjects and builds in complexity.

I am delighted to finally share my process of creating sketchbook pages with you in this book
I chose a variety of different subjects for the six painting projects, from wildflowers to garden subjects and autumnal finds, the projects build in complexity as I share my materials and stages of each page with you.
I also chose to include many of my sketchbooks pages from my sketchbooks, which were created over the years and hope you will enjoy seeing them
